Spotlight Tim Leiweke
An important aspect to look at when trying to predict the future of the inevitable Seattle NHL team is the CEO of Oakview group Tim Leiweke. He is the former president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) and former President and CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG).
He was the President of MLSE during 2013-2014. During this time the Toronto Maple Leafs were : 38–36–8, 84 Points. They didn't make the playoffs and their most notable trade was for Dave Bolland. The general manager of the team was Dave Nonis. In this article about Leiweke it says he went to Toronto because he wanted to build something. He renovated BMO Field, and got approval to build a new Raptors training facility nearby.
With Oak View, Leiweke has partnered with Madison Square Garden and New York Knicks owner James Dolan and talent manager Irving Azoff. MLSE is still a client. His biggest accompplishment in Toronto was appointing Brendan Shanahan. Shannaghan has taken the last place Toronto Maple Leafs from being perrenial losers who hadn't made the playoffs years to being a hockey power house. Under plan supposedly made by Leiweke they took apart the team and rebuilt it to have a thriving farm team and a respectable scouting system.
The question is whether Leiweke can use his skills at putting the right people in positions of power as well as his ability to sell a sports team to a city to bring a winning team to Seattle. Expectations are going to be very high considering the fact that Vegas just won their division in the first year of being an expansion team. All eyes are going to be on Leiweke to see who he hires for key positions and how they go about building an organization.
